The Bullitt County Chess League was established in 2011 under the guidance Superintendent Keith Davis. Our chess league is made up of our 13 elementary schools, six middle schools and our three high schools. Each school has a chess coach/sponsor who conducts weekly chess practices. Each school is to participate in at least four of our BCCL chess tournaments each school year. Schools are encouraged to play in as many outside chess tournaments in the region as well. Our chess league has grown from just three schools offering chess in 2011 to all 22 schools having chess coaches in 2013! Our Purpose The purpose of our chess league is to help students develop chess skills that they can apply to the game of chess and to life itself. Chess and the Classroom Chess teaches student how to set both short term and long term goals. Students also learn how to analyze the chess board which is a big part of critical thinking skills that are needed in the everyday classroom. Chess has been proven to enhance student's ability to perform better academically in math and in reading and that alone makes chess a very valuable asset to any public or private school. Our chess league is becoming one big family as players are making friendships through the game of chess.
