110 students from all over Bullitt County showed up to compete in the 6th annual BCCL Chess Championships! It was a great event that ran fairly smoothly thanks to all of the coaching support from around the county.
The K-1 Section combined with the K-3 section for 38 chess players. The K-5 section had 38 chess players. K-8 had 23 chess players. K-12 had a record turn out of 17 chess players. What is unique about this tournament is that it is strictly a BCPS tournament. We have only allowed one outside player in the past few years. Our county chess title very well me the largest school district chess event in the state. Next year with the addition of some new coaches we may see our dream of having 200 BCPS chess players at one event occur. We have hosted a total of five chess tournaments this school season including the State Championships for Bughouse and the State Grade Level Chess Championships. March 18 we will host the State Team Chess Championships which may bring in over 400 chess players. It is the Sweet 16 of chess for Kentucky. The BCCL will host the 6th Annual BCPS/BCCL Chess Championships at Crossroads Elementary School on January 14, 2017. Crossroads has been so gracious to host the Bullitt County Chess Championships each school year since 2013. The BCCL Chess Championships is only for BCPS students.
This year our county has seen our chess talent grow leaps and bounds in rated chess, but this tournament is for both rated and unrated chess players alike Do not think that all rated players are superior to unrated chess players. This tournament will have players of all abiliteis regardless of ratings. Our goal is to use chess as a means to help students goal set, develop thinking strategies, and to build friendships!. We are one big chess family and this year I hope to see a record turn out in chess participation not only at the BCCL Chess Championships but also at the Feb. 4 Regionals and the March 18 State Team Title that North Bullitt will host. Doors open at 9 AM and the first round begins at 10 AM. We will offer K-1, K-3, K-5, K-8 and K-12 sections. Top 3 players earn trophies! Unlimited players will be in each section. All BCPS chess coaches will need to bring all of their chess sets in case we run low on chess sets. Players need to turn in their chess sign up forms to their chess coaches by Thursday the 12th. If you are a chess player who wants to play but your school does not have a chess program then you may sign-up by having your parent e-mail me at [email protected] with your full name, school, grade, and section that you wish to compete in. See you next Saturday at Crossroads! The morning started off a little slow but once we started the rounds went very smooth.
We had a total of 16 BCPS schools represented. At total of 106 players participated. Each section completed 5 rounds of chess minus the K-12 section which played 4 rounds so that players would not play each other twice. The Bullitt County Chess League completed their 2014-2015 chess season at Crossroads Elementary School yesterday. 93 students competed in grades K-12. The tournament went well as coaches from across the county helped run the tournament. Teams competed in five rounds of chess except in the K-12 section where Bullitt Central and North Bullitt stopped after four rounds of chess as Bullitt Central won their very first county championship.
